Where to find black eggcrate?

anemone

Non-member
Planning expansion to a 20 gallon long aquarium (space is limiting in Boston apartment living  ). Going to keep inverts only, no stony corals at this stage. I'd like to try a sheer rock wall along part of the back of the tank for my existing collection of mushrooms and anemones, similar to this thread in reefcentral.com

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/printthread.php?threadid=725727

I doubt I can cleanly build a wall as good as his at first go, such that white eggcrate isn't showing through. I found black eggcrate at Modern Plastics, but would have to order 50X what I'll actually need for them to ship.

Any idea where to get the stuff locally?

Like the idea, hope to see pics

Like the idea, hope to see pics. Hides equpt. that hangs in the back. The link looked good now I see why you want black. Any safe paint you can use on white egg crate? Hope nothing decides to venture behind the egg crate. Leave room to get a net behind it. Background looks similar to converting a tank into a vivarium for poison dart frogs. It's also warned when building a vivarium to be sure the background is secured well or you'll loose a frog behind it. I have a background that fits in a 75 gal African Cichlid tank made with auto body fibre glass back and stuck slate and slate chucks to fill in the voids. Don't use it, collecting dust, for sale fir anyone interested, cichlid or fresh water.

Thanks for the replies -
Fish88 - any idea where in Needham the ceiling supply co was? "Wellesley Electrical Supply" popped out as one possibility in a Google search.

I'm thinking of trying to modify the setup described on reefcentral by attaching plastic hooks to the rock so it can be hung off the eggcrate, vs. secured with black ties. it would make it easier to manipulate and take down if needed, but I think it will only work for smaller pieces of rock (of which I have a few), and will probably need to drill and epoxy the plastic fittings in place.

i work for a building supply company in woburn. i have one piece right now and i talked with someone at work and he said that we could get whatever is needed.

Why not just build with dry rock and then fill in the spaces with aragrocrete so you dont have any/much eggcrate showing at all? You will have to let it cure for a while but it would be worth not having to try to hide the eggcrate with other rock or frags.

Thanks - I stopped at the one in Avon on the way to the meeting, but seems Kamco is closed over the weekend. Probably best to call ahead ;) .. I'll try Woburn during the week.

I like the concept of having a vertical wall in the back.. when I saw the design on reefcentral, it just clicked. Some of my mushrooms are getting big and should be propagated. If I can hook the rock onto a grid it would make it easier to maintain a natural look, yet be able to "plug and pull" elements as needed as things are added, grow or need to be split.

black eggcrate

i called kamco this morning and the fellow there told me i had to order 15 sheets worth of black eggcrate to get it from them

i need one piece

is there someplace that will sell this piecemeal?

Any Ralph Pill Electrical supply company office.. they usually have it in stock.

Did anyone ever find this or know where to get single sheets of it? I tried Ralph Pill but they didn't have it (Boston location). Is this something that electrical supply stores/warehouses normally carry?

Rustolium - you can buy it at any hardware store :D

Eric-
Any places in particular, I can't seam to find it in the Boston area. Have you seen it anywhere down by you?
