Went ahead and removed the lenses on my Mars Hydro Black Box. I had been debating it for a while, and after speaking with someone yesterday decided to give it a go.
Was running the lights at 40% and now have them closer to 60% and I think they will need more. The spill over lighting is kind of excessive, so I am not too excited about that. The “spot light” effect is definitely better. You can see some remnant algae in the center of the tank, that the light was clearly aiding the growth of.
I went ahead and cranked them to 100% for that last pic to show how bad the spill over is. I don’t have any corals, yet, so the PAR requirements aren’t a necessity yet. I am planning to add corals soon, so I will be looking into remedies for this. Possibly lower the light closer to the top of the tank. Currently it is 10.5” off the water’s surface.
