valve on eheim 1262

does anyone know if its a good or bad idea to gate valve the output of a 1262 return pump? I ask cause i am planning to use this for a return from a 20 gallon sump to a 60g cube, it will have 2 "t" for reactors. right now the water is flowing thru (water test) and the skimmer is breaking in also, seems lke too much much flow.

It's fine to restrict the output, just don't restrict the intake.
