Red Wine Palys Melting. WHY??? :(

Sorry to hear about loosing the Red Wine Palys and other zoos with an unknown reason why. I've had the same happen with zoos and palys side by side to each other and for an unknown reason melt away while others around are full of life and very healthy. I'd really like to find the reason and a cure so's not to loose a prized piece. Jenns on the right track with a prevention which it could work with a matter of time will tell. Also try a fresh water dip, can't hurt.

It's just the Red Wine that I'm having a problem with.

Fresh water dip never work for me. It always end up killing the zoas for me.

Peter if you check on RC, you will see lots of issues with similar color morphs. I have watched several different orange/red similar color morphs melt away in my tanks, and can't seem to put a finger on it at all.
I have noticed that some that I have in fairly high current seem to be doing good. But they could go at any time???

B, yes I've read about high current as well. I adjusted my 3 Tunzes in a way that I have about medium flow going to every part of my tank (except for the rear). My flow is cranking.

Your not alone, I was going to make my 70 a paly/zoa/leather specific tank needless to say that has changed. I will leave whats left but now my tank is in a transitional limbo. I give up on them atleast until someone finds a definative answer as to why they melt, its like the oil situation, too much speculation.

Yes, it just seems like it just melts when it wants to. Frustrating. I wouldn't mind if it was a pest that's causing it but there's non that I can see.

Peter... cross your fingers - I have a frag that seems to be doing ok...
I have also gone thru 3 sets and these are the first ones that are growing.

There are several species of Zoo/Paly's that are very touchy to water and chemical changes... temperature also plays a huge factor.

Did you ever notice people loses always happen in late April - June and then in Oct - Dec. I believe it is our temperature swings in New England that effects some of the less hardy types.

It is not your water or your parms... I believe it's environmental.

Maybe the nicer morphs get whipped around the industry faster. In other words, most still fall into the "wild" colony description, rather than "tank raised". It always seems that things that are "tank raised" are a bit more hardy than those taken directly from the wild.

well i believe that most of the nicer morphs are coming from morphs that take place in peoples tanks, not in the wild... correct?

I read that if you are having a zoa/paly melting problem it was due to alk swings, but again i think it was just speculation.

Red Wines usually only come from people's tanks it is a very hard paly to import due to it's very tough shipping needs, they are mostly tank raised.
Armageddons and Lunar Eclipse are other species that also has the same reputation of not shipping well or not surviving captivity for long periods of time.

These morphs are definitely wild caught. Most of the online sites that are selling them, have just gotten them, cut them up and resell them. It really doesn't give them a chance to settle down and truly acclimate to life in out tanks. These morphs probably won't be truly tank raised for quite some time. As Peter said, he had his for over 2 months, then all of a sudden. I have had the same thing happen. Everything in the tank has stayed the same. PH, Alk, Ca. temp, salinity, flow, light, NH4, NO3,...I just don't get it. I really think they just have major stress from shipping/acclimating/being cut/reshipped/re-acclimated. just my thought. I have some colinies doing ok now, so we shall see.

I don't think wild or tank raise has anything to do with it....as you know there have been great deal of acan lords taken from the wild and importing and chopped up for resale. And they are doing great with no problem.

I'm thinking that these designer zoas/palys are programmed to melt in after a few months just to keep their supply and demand up.

Yes, it is. There are a lot of speculation with alk swing, temp swing, flow, light, etc...but there is no real data to support any of these. Unless I'm missing something.

Your also dealing with single polyp frags, not colonies. You'll probably never know, which sucks.
But, doing too much can be just as bad as doing nothing.
