limited edition

Jack, I think you missed my points. Homework?

I was making a case for why I believe that the LE designation is a scam. I was not trying to make excuses for anyone getting ripped off because they did not "do their homework". I agree with you that everyone is responsible for what they buy including buying LE corals.

As far as LFS are concerned, I buy there if I like the coral - prices and quality vary widely in LFSs too. As far as members selling frags or online frag sellers, I buy from them if I like the coral. If I like an LE I buy it too with my eyes wide open knowing that the price may be high!:) However this does not change my view that LE coral prices are unjustifiably high.

I understand your point, I am saying if someone buys a coral that is classified as "LE" and truly is generic and gets ripped off that is their problem for not knowing what they bought.

When I got into this hobby 12-13 years ago no one held my hand.

I am one of those people if I like it I buy it, I buy now ask price later, have I been burnt sure, it's part of the hobby.

Jack...You won't win The disscussion here!! Trust me!!!:p

LE stands for "Limited Edition" I don't agree with it just being a fancy name either.... I can show you differences in colors between generics or no names & the real deal....

I'm not here to argue...I have alot of them...I've paid big money for them. (& never was the plan to sell them in the equation when I got them) Most people who complain about the LE's won't pay for them....Thats fine...No biggie to me...Marketing...yes....I agree....But it doesn't take away from some of those rare morphs....Yeah eventually some will be watered down & more easy to acquire.....Heck...remember when Orange Digi was a big deal to get??? Orange Cap than Purple cap...even acans for that matter.... When most corals are newly introduced into the hobby they get a large ticket...period...(withing the first year...they are less than half the price they were originally sold for or even up to 4 times less....) Can't say that about "tubs" or "tyree" ...they continue to demand a desire & a higher ticket...Not cause of marketing.....Cause they are indeed the cream of the crop!!! (& for good reason...they have first shot at getting them when they come in from being transshipped)

Thats my take on the "hole" subject....:D

Every few month we get a thread like this one and I'm so used to seeing it.

I like this saying that most, "You pay for what you get." period

When most corals are newly introduced into the hobby they get a large ticket...period...(withing the first year...they are less than half the price they were originally sold for or even up to 4 times less....)

Oh I agreed totally to this statement....I've seen many of my zoas/palys drop just like the stock market now. And yet I still keep on searching for new morph and pay the asking price.:. I wish I can find a generic of some of the zoas/palys I have so I can stop paying these ridiculous prices for only a single polyp.

We all need help.

I do not set prices based on weather or not they are from Tyree or Tubs. That would be a rip off of my fellow reefers in my opinion.

I was making a case for why I believe that the LE designation is a scam.

I think these statements are a little excessive. No one is getting ripped off here, people who sell frags no doubt price them according to what they value them at, nobody is forced or tricked into to buying anything.

I personally buy my corals based on how they look, not by their names. I have a couple LE items just because I liked them, not because of their names, indeed I sometimes forget what I have (as far as names go), but that is not how everyone looks at it, and I can respect that. To be honest, these often repeated debates bother me a little. If someone takes particular pride in their LE and "name" corals, I say good for them, and if someone else thinks their non-name stuff is just as good, I say good for them too. Different aspects of this hobby will please different folks, and as long as people are enjoying themselves and reefing responsibly, then who am I or anyone else to judge how they go about it?

To me Limited Edition is not a "scam" or marketing ploy its just a fact. Tyree only frags his "common" corals (LE) by-monthly, and his more rare morphs "Auction Edition" quarterly, and the hobby doesn't become watered down because systems crash daily, even the big name guys have had their share of crashes, ie. Steve Weast, Hugo Zunuga{sp} etc, and also the people who just jump on name brands and throw them into a tank thats not well established or think they will "cash in" on corals usually lose the pieces sooner or later, its hard enough for some people to keep saltwater fish alive let alone delicate strands of corals, also Tyree also "retires" his LE's after the market becomes saturated with them just look at his site there are many former beauties that are no longer being fragged and sold at a premium.....and when I see a "le" coral for sale from a member on the boards it doesnt mean that the price will be high, instead it means that the frag will be smaller than another more common peice, and since when did we become cheap in this hobby?, the same people that complain about a $50 coral spent $2000 on a skimmer, and spend $250 a month on electricity for their tank(s).....if those people have a problem buying LE corals then dont buy them, but at the same time they should be using a "Turboflotor", and the cheap over-seas mh bulbs...

IMO it's a mix of everything everyone has already said.

"Limited edition" means, identifiability, supply and demand, marketing, desierable qualities, and higher prices...

IME/IMO some LE stuff is really special and worth the $$, some LE stuff is not so special.

It is what it is.

Le

I think these statements are a little excessive. No one is getting ripped off here, people who sell frags no doubt price them according to what they value them at, nobody is forced or tricked into to buying anything.

I never said people are "getting ripped off here" or that people are "tricked into to buying anything". My point is that many, if not all LEs (Tyree included) can be found under other names at much cheaper prices and that the "LE designation" is sometimes misleading especially to new people. There are also other non-LE corals that are just as striking, colorful, and desirable as LE corlas. To put it simply, I don't think LE alone means a coral is any better or worse than any other coral and that the designation is largely a marketing gimmick.

I agree and you basically repeated what I stated previously. I didn't feel like I was "judging" anyone.... just discussing the merits and shortcomings of the LE designation.

I also think that just because I paid $200.00 for a LE , frags should be sold at $200.00 each to pay for my "LE addiction".

& BTW.... it's spelled with a W...
Not cool.

If you want something bad enough, you'll pay for it. That's the theory behind LE. If you have patience and wait it out, you'll get what you want eventually. This hobby is all about the patience.

If i might interject some intellectual comments here. I don't see anyone complaining about ORA? Yet they sell frags upwards of $60. Personally some of they're stuff is really nice, some not so hot......I buy what i like color wise and pay the price. I purchase from them namely because what you see is what you get right from the source.

Its not 5th removed from someone you never heard of that got it off of jonathan (tubs) subsilla.

Anyway if you like it for color go buy it, if you think you can buy a coral that matches say the crayola then go for it, but remember 50% of the time just becasue it looks like that in the selling tank doesn't mean it will look like that in your tank.

I think the bottom line here is, if you like it, you buy it, regardless of designation or price. If it is a coral you know you won't see again for a while for sale, you will pay more. You buy based on color, looks, source, etc. and IMO, the designation is somewhat secondary. If it's a coral you know you will see ten times in a month, then you won't pay as much for it. It is all basic marketing and supply and demand, that's all. I will post a coral with the title it was sold to me with, not to try to get more, but to tell the buyer what it is and whether it is the possibly rarer type or not. Is there a difference in some corals with the LE, tubs, tyree designation? I personally think there is, and you can see the differences very often, but that won't stop me from buying a non-LE, tyree, tubs designated coral if I like it. It is as simple as that, you buy what you want and you pay what you want regardless of whether anyone or everyone agrees with you or not.

i do all sps and i buy what i like i dont cry about a price i just pay it this is a hobby not i have to fill it today i see thing on brs and say i wood love 2 have that but if the buget says no than it is no i fell that times are getting harder 4 people so money is getting tighter this is what i think

I never said people are "getting ripped off here" or that people are "tricked into to buying anything".

Actually, that is exactly what you said...

That would be a rip off of my fellow reefers in my opinion.

I was making a case for why I believe that the LE designation is a scam.

Perhaps you didn't mean it quite as it reads, but that is how it reads to me. You basically said you don't sell your LE stuff at a premium because that would be a rip off, by making that statement you are basically saying those who do are ripping people off. Again, maybe that is not how you meant it, it just reads that way to me...

No, I did not mean it in the way you are interpreting it.

I never inferred that others are ripping off anyone. in fact I applauded the fact that many BRS members sell LE at reduced prices. I really think you are reading too much into what I said. I am speaking for myself and no one else. As I mentioned previously in this thread, I do buy LEs, I do buy non-LEs, I do not buy a coral just because it is LE or just to sell it to others, I know (from my almost 10 years in the hobby) there are other non-LE corals that are just as colorful as LE, I think LE is a marketing tool , I price my frags based on the rate of growth and the size of the mother colony in my system, and LEs can be found under many different names at significantly reduced prices.

Let Me Help Out A Bit.

LE is only a way to charge more mony .
