DIY Display tank goes Sump:p

Moving into our new apartment this coming Saturday and I figured it was just about time to convert the acrylic tank I picked up some months ago and make it the new sump to fit under my stand.

I still need to finish up my ph probe holder and make something to secure the drain line.

Top down view of the sump. Water drains into it in the bottom right hand corner. Flows across that section, through a slit and into the skimmer section (large square). Then overflows in the the rectangle at the bottom of the photo where some live rock will be stashed. Then into the return pump section.

This photo is the back of the sump that will be facing the wall. The return section is on the left in the photo:p. The long section on the right will hold live rock.

If you don't own a CNC machine then a Dremel is your best friend. Twenty minutes later and I had a filter sock holder!

Here you can see some more handy Dremel work! This slot allows the water to flow from the front of the sump where it drains into from the tank into the skimmer section.

Nice dremel work Barry....... The dremel is one of my fav. tools! You going to give it a leak test before setting it up on Saturday?

Very creative design Barry looks like you used that tank to it's fullest. Guess it was never meant to be a Display tank.

Nice job Barry!!!
Thanks!

I didn't tank any photos of it in action when I tested it yesterday. Have to wait till after the move for some action shots.
nice sump.
Thanks!

Thanks!
Very nice! Did you use one of those Dremel tools to make the sock holder?
The bit I used to Dremel out the filter sock holder is cylinder shaped that comes to a point. Looks like something for grinding but it cuts through the acrylic like butter in a grinding/melting way. Then I cleaned it up and smooth down the rough edges with a cylinder sander bit for the Dremel.

Already a head of you..I tested it out Sunday when I finished up.

Thanks Greg! It was sad/hard to turn it into a sump, but I figured at least this way it plays a role in the hobby:D.

Very nice!! Dremels my fav tool for working with acrylic, I use a router bit for almost all my cutting... gives a nice clean edge with almost no sanding to finish it up..
