Chemi pure elite

Hey everyone, In was just reading up on the chemical pure elite as I am adding it when I get home tonight. I read that before entering it into the tank I should run it under tap water for a few seconds. Is it really ok to use tap water or should I use RO/DI water? Also it says it adds a blue tint ton the water. Does it look good or should in try to rinse it to not have this happen? thanks!

I run mine under the tap (well water) for a 30 seconds or so and I've had no problems as far as I can tell.

I have used it and also rinsed under tap with no problems. It doesn't really "add" a blue color in as much as it contains high grade carbon that removes DOCs that can tint the water an amber color. The result is a crystal clear water that appears "blueish" under typical reef lighting. To me, it is just a very clear water. I do like it. ChemiPure Ultra is just GAC and GFO which you can get cheaper by buying them separately, however this is just a case of paying more for the convenience of having it in a bag you can drop in.

Any mixture that contains GFO should be run under water briefly (tap is fine) because initial contact with the GFO produces a strong amount of heat and steam/vapor. This isn't a hassle in your sink under your tap, but isn't a reaction you should have in your display or sump.

I always wash GFO before introducing it to the sump for this reason.

So since I am.going to.dona.water change tonight, I assume its ok to just rinse it on the dirty water before o dump it?

I just put a bag of it in my tank cuz my water got real cloudy for some reason. So I rinsed it with my RO water for like two minutes and it made my tank look crystal clear!! The stuff works amazing!!! But definetly rinse it the stuff that comes out of it is nasty brownish.

Yep! I just added mine. I rinsed it under tap water then in my old tank water. It says online they recommend not rinsing for longer than a minute and definitely not rinse it until the black stuff stops. The hardest part I had was getting it tied up to my media basket. ended up getting 2 extra zip ties and doing it that way! I'll give it about 12-14 hrs and then test everything since I did the water change as well.

So I woke up this morning.... (well it was actually only about 3 hours since I had added new filter floss, the purigen and chemical pure) and I had stirred up some sand last night during the water change) and although my lights weren't in yet, it looked like the water was all clear already. I can't wait to get out of work today so I can go home and check it out/ clean the glass in preparation for tomorrows addition of my first fish and a coral or two!

I know this thread is old, but I need advice. I just opened a new jar of Chemi Pure Elite, and the bag is damp. There is condensation in the jar even though the seal was not broken. I've been rinsing this bag for almost 15 minutes, and I cannot get the water to run clear. Should I toss it? BTW, someone said it only needs a minute of rinsing, but the Boyd website says to rinse 5 minutes or so until the water looks clear. Mine still looks like tea.

The bag comes damp. That's how it should be. I only give it a quicknrinse, about 30-60 seconds.

Really? How did I not notice this before? Hard to believe this is my third time changing it! I finally realized that if I stopped messing with the bag and just let the water run through it, it was getting more clear. Thanks so much for responding. Now I can put my tank back together. :)
