just set up my tank... so question on plumbing. I went with a Durso standpipe design, does any one know how to quiet it down... its like a toilet flushing every 30 seconds or so.... I am still messing with it and read about hole size on the top for a vent... also heard of airline tubing in the overflow?? any ideas would be great...

I believe this happens if you're trying to push too much too fast through it, you will have normal drainage, then the pipe fills with water, and it goes to full siphon. Once that happens it drains super fast, then sounds like a toilet flushing.
For me I put a ball valve on my return pump and reduced the flow until you get a nice steady quiet drain

This happens when there is not enough air (hole being too small). It will create a siphon which causes the toilet flushing sound. Is there a hole in the cap and can you make it a little bigger? Is this a homemade standpipe? What size is the hole in the cap currently? Just want to make sure that is the issdue before doing anything.
Usually if it's flushing it's because the hole is too small, but sometimes too big causes similar flushing. Strange but true.
How big is the vent hole now? If it's big enough to stick a small zip tie into the hole, try doing that to restrict it a bit more. The problem will get better or worse, and you can go from there. You can also just partially cover the hole with your finger and see it that makes it better or worse.
You can thread the cap and install a john guest ball valve, but IME these can be tough to dial in just right. Personally I've always just experimented with the size of the hole in the PVC cap, they are cheap so no big deal if you drill one with a hole that's too big.

It's strange, if the hole is too small the drain is almost at a siphon which makes it flow faster, which draws the water level down in the overflow until the siphon breaks - then you get a flushing noise as the siphon breaks, flow slows and the water level rises.
If the hole is too big, the drain flows slower and gradually the water level in the overflow rises until it covers the air hole, cuts off the air, and turns it into a siphon which speeds the flow and creates a flushing.
Try partially blocking that 1/4" hole (dropping a few small zip ties into the hole is an easy way to do it).
