I cleaned it while i was in a suit and tie...... that's the best he's going to get for short notice.

I'd like to arrange to pick stuff up on saturday if posible or if people are in the area maybe i can meet them somewhere.

I don't know who Ryan is, but he can have a piece of purple rim cap and good size porcillipora(sp?)

Ryan is Piscevore if I'm not mistaken.

I wish I hadnt just started this hobby, and actually had some frags, so that I could give him some.

oh man. that probably means that i lost my clam he was holding for me :( i'll contribute a blue millepora frag for ryan.

Nuno and I were discussing the calcium build-up issues of the T4 pump just a few weeks ago in this thread. He brought up the issue to let others with the pump know what had recently happened to him.

Anyone who owns one of these pumps, please... put a regular cleaning into your schedule and keep to it. They are great pumps, with a well documented weakness.

Does anyone know whether Ryan uses B-Ionic in his system?

Yeah... I could have guessed with that kind of build-up, and for the relatively short persiod he's been using that pump. What's it been... something like 4-5 months? And... unless he really cleaned it when he got it, he may have been piling onto any build-up that was already in there.

B-Ionic is hell on those pumps, as I mentioned to Nuno in the thread I posted above. My theory is in that discussion... but suffice to say that - in my opinion - if you use B-Ionic, and own a T4, your cleaning schedule should be more regular than for those using T4s (or any other pump in that series) on systems supplemented by reactors.

what type of pump is a T4? is it magnetically driven like a mag3? is a mag3 susceptible to breaking down because of calcium buildup? if so, i better clean out my pump as well.

Any pump is susceptible to seizing because of Calcium build up Peter. (although some pumps seem to accumulate the crud more quickly than others)

I believe the T4 pumps are direct-drive pumps, with a sealed bearing around the metal shaft, not a magnetically driven pump.

Hey Peter -

You should clean your pump anyway :)! A Mag isn't as susceptible to the seizing issue caused by calcium buildup... but the ceramic shaft inside of Mag pumps can also get coated with deposits over (generally a longer) time, and cause problems. Soak the whole impeller assembly in vinegar and it lossens everything right up.
The Mag impeller should spin freely on the white ceramic shaft.

Hey Moe - Maybe we should have a vareity pack, clean your pump tutorial at one of the upcoming meetings?

amazingly the clams ( i think), the BTA, and the indestructable monti's made it but his whole top half of the tank didn't. can't imgine the pump was off for too long. but it was off long enough to melt xenia... nasty nasty stuff. we'll see tonight what might pull thru.

I can scrap up some replacement xenia. :D But that's about all my little softie tank has.

This was quite the wake-up call.

How long was he running the pump for?

How long does one generally recommend going before cleaning their T4?

My frag tank is rather limitted now, but I have a few nice soft corals. If he wants Montipora in any colour, though, I have it,

Getting ready to set up a T4 on an OceansMotion...we'll schedule a cleaning every 3 to 4 months minimum. For circulation we run an Iwaki 70, and we clean that every 6 months no matter what! It doesn't take long, and as long as you have disconnects on each side of the input/output, it is simple! It doesn't take long to get build up enough to affect pump performance. Lot better to clean it 2 to4 times a year, then to have the nightmare Ryan is having.
