Help with a toadstool

Ever since I added phosban media with my carbon 2 weeks ago my toadstool has clamped up and is starting to shrink. At what point do I give up on it? Is it decaying and polluting my tank?

That thing looks like it is totally decaying. Touch it and if its flakes up and breaks pieces off get it out of the tank. Alot of leathers go through phases and close up for a while but this one looks in really bad shape.

Get it out....it's dead.
Why are you running carbon and phosban?
Not that there's anything wrong with it,but algae problems?

Does anybody know why toadstools just don't do well sometimes? I have had a tank full of thriving corals and have had them die and be the only coral affected.

I had toadstools that thrived an multiplied for years, then just started to shrink and disappear. Didn't rot or decay, just sort of ceased to exist. I don't know what caused it - everything else was healthy and growing. I attributed it to the introduction or growth of some other corals, but I have no way of knowing, really. I had the same thing happen to yellow polyps at a different time for no apparent reason,at a time when everything else was healthy and growing, and there were no apparent changes in the tank or my maintenance routine. Total mystery to me.

It doesn't look to be falling apart. I'd give it the sniff test, if it makes you gag it's dead, if it just smells like fishtank, it's still alive but not very happy.

It looks like it's overdue for a shed. That's an awful lot of aglae growing on it, but it could be about to shed. Did it seem normal and healthy 2 wks ago? If so, that's a bit long for going into a shed, but IMO it is possible.

I pulled it out, sorry to see it gone.. it was very large and healthy before I added the phosban.

I added it because my phosphates were high and was advised by a reliable source to add it with my carbon. I now have brown fuzzy algae and my nice toadstool is dead, needless to say I am no longer using it .

What did you do with it? If you tossed it in the trash, it's still alive. I once left a hunk of a toadstool stuck in a wad of cheato (no water) in an empty bucket over night, it survived.

Jimmy, I actually have it in a container. and it is not falling apart, just really clamped. should I put it back in the tank?

If it doesn't stink, then IMO yes put it back in.

It should smell a little funky as most corals do, but if it's rotting you will know it right away. Just like smelling milk, if it's bad it'll make you gag. If it smells OK, then it's just shriveled up and I would put it back.

Also, just to check, you started running a GFO type phosphate remover, not an aluminum based remover, right? (GFO is brown, aluminum would be white)

I just tossed one from my tank.I have had it for a year, looked fine, and last week I noticed a hole in it. Now it looks kind of swollen. I dont take a chance with chicken, so I am not going to chance this either.;)

If you do decide to put it back it the tank, try to gently get some of the algae off. I've had a toadstool close up for close to two months only to come back looking healthier than before.

Fortunately, I had some good flow on it so green algae didn't accumulate too much and whatever did, the CUC took care of it.

I was just too lazy :o to take it out when it closed up for that long and now I'm glad I didn't ;)

The product is seachem phosguard and it is small white pellets. This tank does not have a sump, so I am running a canister filter (with no mechanical sponges) for flow and carbon media. That being said, this was the product recomended for that setup?? Is this product not safe to use?
This morning the toadstool looked worse than ever, so out it came.I cannot risk the whole tank for it anymore.

I don't know,that TS looked pretty dead.
I've had my TS look bad after introducing carbon to my system.
Don't give up on them. They can be very hardy and grow fast once established for a while. Was that a long tentacle?
Here's my monster before the lights come on.It's over 2 1/2 yrs. in my system and has a cap that's about a foot.

OK, there's the problem. I don't recall all the details, but aluminum based phosphate removers are known to frequently seriously annoy some soft corals. I don't think anyone ever figured out why, but IIRC it was seen quite often.

I would strongly suggest tossing that seachem stuff and replacing it with a GFO based phosphate remover. I'd also run fresh carbon in hopes of taking whatever irritant may be in the water from the aluminum based remover.

Good call John,I've read that in some articles as well.
But.....that TS was dead.:p

This is what it looked like. I did remove the phosguard and added fresh carbon. Thanks for all the info
