MP40 Question

I am in build mode for new tank, 48" wide x 24" deep x 16" tall. Will be heavy SPS. With return pump and two Tunze Turbelle's I'll be at 2,800 Gal per hour. I am thinking of adding 2 MP40's, is that total overkill for a tank this small?

At full speeds that’s a fair amount of movement and if you have a sand bottom, it could be a lot. I prefer the mp40 over the tunze. I just replaced my two turbelles with mp40s

The tunze's will last you forever compared to anything Ecotech is putting out these days. Not saying people don't have success with MP40's, but to each their own.

When the tank grows in in 2-4 years it's not overkill. You should be fine for probably close to a year and then look for dead spots and fill as needed.
But I just set up a similar tank and got 2 mp40 and 2 nero 5 with 1600 gph return and probably going to get a set of 6105's soon.
I agree with Paul the Tunze are built to last no question. It's all about what works best for your system at a given time

Right now I have them(nero) behind my rockwork to keep detritus from settling. They definitely move a lot of water. If you don't want/need to utilize the settings on the mp40 they are very comparable

I have used Tunze's in the past and switched to MP40s a few years ago. Tunze of course build good pumps but I find controllability and cleanability aspects of MP40's more attractive. My MP 40s are from 2016 production batch and I luckily haven't had any issues (yet). I clean my pumps a lot more often than I see elsewhere and ease cleanability could be the most attractive factor for me.

How often do people clean their powerheads? I'm currently at once a month; even with that lose quite a bit of flow by the end.
