My Local Native Fish

Im not a diver, but would love to tag along. those fish are awesome, and like you said they have a story.

Good Job Derek

Yeah, esp that orange filefish. the thing is bizarre. ill try and get a pic in the next day of how he swims. basically his body position is up and down instead of left and right. Right now we could prob catch some northern puffers...wrasses....mummichogs, striped killis, naked gobies, sheepshead minnows, filefish, and northern pipefish, rainwater killifish, of course always the opportunity for seahorses and who knows what else!

Well, now it looks like i'm going to have to setup a coldwater tank and go for a dive this summer!

You don't need a "cold water" tank. But I guess tropical keepers may think 70s is cold. There are some species around here that prefer colder then that. I am heading down to the ocean this Saturday looking for some possible last minute tropicals and seahorses.

Where are you heading???

Tiverton and rehobeth, Barrington possibly jamestown. I'm going with another guy from rhode island reef association. Rehobeth will be a brackish/fresh quick spot. Good way to see fish that normally wouldn't see. Darters, sticklebacks, hogchokers and who knows what else. Email me for details and immediate response

I used to collect around MA while snorkling for lobsters and had a 90 G GOM tank for a while. I miss it, it is a really cool tank and fun to collect. I even kept Mackerel and squid but not for long. You mentioned anenomes... you probably already know thi but take a look at the lines in the water around boat docks in new england. More anenomes than you know what to do with.

Only problem with Seahorse now is that they are protected by CITIES, and if you are cought collecting them without permits, BIG trouble...(another reason why wild ones are rarely seen and expensive in stores)
But tank raised ones are available quite often, and for good prices.

most local Anemones are not photosynthetic (or not nearly as much as tropical ones) It is getting them the food and flow they require that is the tricky part. The cold water Anemone tank at the NEAQ is one of my favorite tanks...
We plan to do a local Ocean display tank at the shop.

Thanks for all the info. My favorites are puffers and filefish. I do love the short big eyes as well.
