my re-build thread

lol... that makes zero sense... the whole skimmer is less than the pump?

I was looking at just standard water pumps (not needle wheels) which is why i was guessing like 350..

"The pump is the heart of the skimmer."

You like that? :p I just made that up... on my own. I don't know! :D

lol.. that's odd.

I wonder if it's truly a 1500 on the skimmer? Add says it is... but??? for 650 right now i can get the whole skimmer pump included.... but oh yeah if you want to just buy the pump gimme 850? Say whattt???

Jay- The hurricone is nice, and i'm sure it works well... but i don't get it. With just a bit of a cone in the neck, what is that doing for it? I'm wondering if it skims better than a skimmer with the same size body and same pump?

Yep. They send you a stripped down pump that is designed to fail in exactly 731 days (2 year warranty), so that you'll have to buy a new one for $850. ::

:p

Yeah, it don't make no sense. But I would guess that you're getting a legit RD 1500. It wouldn't be a bad idea to ask in the Royal Exclusiv Forum on RC to be sure.

Cool. I stand corrected. So you've heard that these mini pumps are in the $350 range?

haha nope... i haven't. I know that the Mini red dragon "water" pumps are in that range.. but those are just the pumps without the skimmer volute and needlewheels. I bet these would run more than that... but then again i really have no idea.

So I've been talking with Kevin (KJB) and it got me thinking that a tank similar to a 120 (maybe a little smaller height wise, like 18-20") would be a really nice sized tank... the extra 6" front to back would be a really nice luxury to have...

I'd have to rebuild the stand which would be a total PITA as i spent a long time working on the current stand... but it's doable..

The real question is: Would a 6 bulb ATI fixture provide enough coverage? I'm thinking that it wouldn't be ideal and i would have to upgrade to an 8 bulb fixture... which if that's the case then i'll probably just scrap this pipe dream of a 24" wide tank ;)

so erm... after looking at Steve Dola's build.. i think i'm going to have CS make me a tank like he did. I've already talked to CS a good deal and we've got things more or less figured out. I haven't made it official yet.. but probably will in a month or so.

Sweet. CS is a good guy. So you're going 24" deep (front to back)?

No, that would constitute at least a new stand... proabably a new light too... so i decided to ditch that idea. Would have been nice though.

Haven't decided on final dimensions yet... either 48x18x17 or 48x18x20

Weeeeee a new tank!!!!!!!! I am picking up my CS made tank on the 28th!!!!!!!!

the aquactinics constellation is a great fixture. one big downside imo to the api is that all of their fixtures only have 2 bulbs for actinics. and then the rest are on another switch. be it 4 or 6.

The constellation has 3 sepparate switches(2x2x3)

Yeah, i almost bought a constellation instead actually, they are a serious piece of equipment as well, and i love the option of that extra 7 bulb.

yeah, i think i may be getting the same style overflow as you... he said he was going to send me pictures of yours when it was done...

I understand needing a new stand. But with the lighting you could keep it forward, above the tank and your corals forward as well. The darker back wall would give the tank a nice sense of added depth. That was my plan if I had gone with Lumenarc Minis. I'll probably still try it with my tank.

hmmm maybe i won't completely throw it out yet... I'll talk it over with CS and see how much extra it would cost to add 6" front to back... then if i do that i'll have to figure out a stand... but hey, i've got all summer ;).

Stand schmand... :D All summer? By my personal calculations, you've got at least two years. LOL. :D

You'll always want to upgrade later. But for now, get what you want in a tank. You'll love the added depth. That's my uneducated opinion. I've seen a few tanks online that had that darkened back for effect and it looked pretty pissa to me kidd. The perfect example is Sanjay's 500 gallon tank. It's the size of Dave and Gina's behemoth, but all it has are Lumenarcs up front. Actually, he might only have Minis on that.

Who is CS? is it going to be rimless? Starfire glass? I dont even have my tank done, and I want to start a bigger one
