That really sucks about your clam, sorry to hear it. I am sure you can find something sweet to do with the shell after you remove the clam and get it cleaned out.

Sometimes skimmers that have slider tubes like ASM, octopus, etc. can "leak" water out of the tank if the slider tube is too close to the edge of the sump... if it almost touches the edge sometimes you can get some occasional splatter that gets on the rim and eventually migrates over.

Sure do....I doubt they eat a dying clams though. I have seen photos in restaurants and fish markets in Asian that have beautiful giant clams in tanks to be picked to eat.

Good thought jeremy, but the leak wasn't coming from my sump, i can almost say that for sure.

Don't know what changed either... i've got to have something going on.

My phosphates are high, but is .4 enough to kill a clam??

Its a possibility... but it would have to be a large snail, and i don't have many of those. Plus it would have to be out of the water for some time to be able to climb into the overflow.

Edit.. actually on 2nd thought i don't even think thats possible.

everything is taken care of... i removed the clam and put the shell back in (gross)

The clean up crew is going CRAZZYY over the traces of clam meet i left on the shell.

Looks like they will make quick work of it all.

wasn't quite 12" more like 10, but still huge.

Smelled like low tide =/.

the worst smell was when i was prying the shell open so i could put the half with the cucumber back in.

return pump shuts off, with powerheads still running. Tank level drops 1/2", and now a powerhead that was spraying water towards the surface, is exposed and squirting water straight out of the tank!

You said you've shut off the tank, but have you shut off just the return pump to see what happens?

Also, don't underestimate the ability of a humble snail to royally screw up your tank. I wouldn't be so quick to say that he couldn't climb in your overflow, and take a trip down the plumbing, slowing things up enough on his way down that the display tank overflowed temporarily.

Good thought on the powerhead, but display doesn't drain enough to dispose them, plus the return pump didn't lose power overnight.


If you saw the way my overflow was rigged i think you would doubt a snail too... =)

Its using a HOB overflow box, with a hard plastic mesh guard over the intake section... (a nassarius could squeeze through, but nothing bigger).

Then once it gets through the box it would have to climb up my modified durso standpipe, and through one of the small holes in the standpipe ( i think there are about 12-15 holes in all) and into the pipe... if it was big enough to clog the pipe it probably wouldn't be able to do all of the above.. right?

Sounds like your overflow is well-protected.

How do you know the return pump didn't stop running last night? Obviously something happened last night that you're not aware of, right?
