RODI water, tested both the fresh water, newly made salt water, and display tank. Silicates test was 0 on all three. Given the lack of silicates and other behavior I'm pretty sure we're dealing with dinos not diatoms unfortunately.
 
I had an ATS and now have an ARID algae reactor. The ATS worked very well, but was a real PITA to clean. Every week I had to scrape the thing. So when I put up my present tank, I didn't put the ATS back into operation. I have only had the ARID reactor for a few weeks. So far all is well and the chaeto is growing like mad. Any one of the algae growing methods will work, you just have to pick which is most appropriate for your setup. The refugium setup is the least expensive, but uses the most space. The reactor is the most expensive, but uses the least space and is the easiest to maintain.
