Chlorinated's Innovative Marine 20 Gallon Mixed Reef

Chlorinated

Hi everyone,

I joined the club a few months back at the auction and thought it was about time to start up a build thread. I have had fresh water tanks for years (community and oscars) but always wanted a saltwater setup.

About 2.5 years ago I finally took the plunge after months of research and purchased the Innovative Marine 8 gallon. I know most people don't recommend starting small, but living in an apartment, and the thought of moving it later made it seem like a good size. I kept the stock lights (8w led's), upgraded the stack return to an MJ 900 and upgraded the stock media basket to the Aqua Gadget running Chemipur Elite and Purigen.

The 8 gallon did well for the most part, but lost several corals with time due to small crashes and just the general learning curve that we all go through. I eventually upgraded the light to the 60w 16K Maxspect Razor Nano. The light looked awesome, but I got "light happy" and bleached out 90% of my corals. I learned and cranked them way down and things SLOWLY started to recover.

Finally this year my wife and I decided to upgrade to the Innovative Marine Fusion 20 gallon, the 8 was just too small and my 5" Durassa clam wasn't helping the space situation. I kept the MJ 900 return and added a RW-4 to the tank for flow. I also upgraded the lights to a 4 bulb 24" Aquaticlife T5HO fixture (2 ATI Actinic, B+, Coral+).

Since the swap and upgrade on the lights, the tank has never looked healthier, and I am seeing more growth than ever before. I still run Chemipure Blue and Purigen in one media rack, filter sock in the other. Weekly 2.5 gallon water changes with Red Sea Coral Pro, Seachem Reef Builder in my ATO and BRS Mag and Ca for dosing.

I would eventually like to add the Ghost protein skimmer, and junk the filter socks for a second Aqua Gadget media tray.

Nice little mixed reef you've got there! That clam looks hefty in the 20g, let alone 8g.

Thanks, i appreciate the compliments! The clam was only about 2.5 inches when i got him and he has easily doubled in size. I knew they got big but had to grab him. One of the reasons I upgraded was so that i would not have to trade it in. Has lots of room to grow now, its growth plate is hugh since the swap like it knows theres room now.

Some updated pics. Hawkins is growing nicely and the zoas have poped iut a few small heads as well.

Been having trouble keeping my alk up. Been using Seachem Reefbuilder in my ATO, but it isnt very basic so my pH stays about 7.8 and alk at 7 maybe 7.5. Switching to BRS soda ash. I hope the higher pH supliment will stabilize my pH and let me bump my alk to the 8.5-9 range i want.

Happy 4th everyone! Hope everyone has an awesome weekend.

Stipped by AcroGarden on Sat and grabbed some new corals. Thanks again Dong, amazing selection.

Thanks! It is getting quite big. Since the move over to the 20 and the change from LED to T5 it has been growing like a beast. My alk drops alot every day, and its a bit of a strugle finding a balance with it in there and having only a 20gal tank. Its a great looking clam though, don't want to give it up, but he would free ALOT of space.

Lol going bigger would be nice but i just upgraded to the 20 in Feb. Besides being in an apt, i really don't want to go much bigger untill I have a house so that I won't need to move it. I was paranoid moving mu nuvo 8 nevermind something large.

Made some changes to the tank. Unfortunately the clam was just too big and had to go. Luckily Dong was kind enough to give it a good home. In its place ive added some rock and more coals.

All the corals seem to be growing well. My Alk consumption was cut almost in half when I removed the clam, but that was to be expected. Also added a midnight clown to pair with my Ocellaris. First week was a bit rough but i think they are finaly on Ok terms and no longer fighting.

In other news, i got around to setting up my old IM Nuvo 8g. My wife is pregnant with our first and we are going with an under water theme so naturally a fish tank was a perfect addition.

It's freshwater, but i've never done freshwater plants before so giving them a go.

Tank update. Everything is going strong, and growing well. Got some new additions as well. The big change I made is going from distilled wter for topoff and rodi for salt to going full dechlorinated tap water for topoff and making my own salt water (Aquaforest). Been using tap for over a month now and so far no negative side effects.
