when curing live rock before a tank is setup. what is teh minimum needed. I have a couple 55 barrels laying around would like to start curing some rock and not sure what I need to do so as far as minimums for filtration

ive heard of just a few air stones and heaters
55g barrels may need a few more air stones than a 5 gallon bucket

excellent

wasn't sure if I should have a skimer to clean water I am guesing water changes to keep it fresh

Depends if you're trying to preserve life/hitchhikers on the rock. If not, and if smell doesn't matter, just dump the rock in the barrel with a pump and heaters, and let it stew for a few weeks. Check the ammonia level, and then let it stew some more if needed.

If you want to baby the stuff living on the rock, then a skimmer or regular water changes is a good idea.

water changes

I have no problem doing weekly changes but no skimer to hook up to it yet

is it dry rock? or live rock? if its dry rock then Id just pop it in some water with a piece of Live rock and run a strong powerhead and heater. do a WC once every week until levels stabilze. If its live rock then Id consider 'cooking' the rock. check RC for details but its a good way to clean the rock of any algea.
