i just got home from work and noticed a diatom outbreak and what looks like red slime on my live rock. it just appeared?!?! could having the lights on longer than usual cause this?
The tank has been running for almost 7 yrs so it would be weird if a cycle started.

Have you added any new fish lately? Have you been doing regular water changes? Have you tested your parameter? Check out the following article:

Diatoms don't look like red slime. Sounds like cyano bacteria to me.

May be it is related to the red tide, biological clock for cyano, may be?

I know diatoms don't look like red slime.. I have been in the hobby for 10 yrs. I have a dusting of brown in some spots and red slime or cyano on others. non is on the sand, just the rocks. i iwll check out the article
