refugium and protein skimmer

....but the electricity saved by not using a bubblemagno pays for my salt.

hmmm let's calculate this. What volume of water changes do you do monthly? My skimmer pump probably costs under 3 dollars a month at 35 watts...

How am i close minded? It's the people that think all of this expensive equipment is useless that are close minded... i run a tank with all t5's, a full blown zeovit system, and with minimal live rock... that goes against what just about every "experienced" hobbyist here would recommend for someone setting up a new tank..

Also, standard fluorescent lighting has been around the aquarium hobby for a lot longer than metal halide lighting.... it's the metal halides that wouldn't be around if people were close minded...

since the majority of the hobby seems to run Metal halides, wouldn't it make me open minded since i switched from metal halide to t5 lighting, despite never seeing a nice all t5 lit tank in person?

Dude, nobody said that expensive equipment and stuff is useless and the fact that its expensive is irrelevant. I have a 300 gallon Full Blown Zeo tank with thousands invested in top notch equipment. Including a skimmer This has nothing to do with cost so dont go there. I am by no means trying to say save money avoid a skimmer, but just the pics of KSC's tank prove that you saying its not feasible or whatever you are trying to say is wrong. It can be done it is being done successfully and if KSC is happy and successful without a skimmer then why say they are not?

I doubt KSC is doing tons of water changes, She/he sorry I don't know, just has the right balance and can get away with and be successful without a skimmer. This is a proven fact before your very eyes. It can be done but only in the right way. If you don't care for fish and only want to have mostly corals and know your marine chemistry it can be a successful system without one.

what are you talking about? KSC's whole argument is that people waste money on skimmers, he's said it before in other threads, that's what i'm talking about...

I'm not dissing your system, or KSC's system in anyway... i've said many times previously in this thread and in other's im not saying THAT IT CAN'T BE DONE. I'm simply saying that it's not practical, and it's not freaking advice we should be giving to new hobbyist!

I was responding to the fact you called me close minded, and i was saying that when i'm running what i am over here, much of which is the newer fad in the hobby, how am i close minded?

And FWIW, i've never seen a system that made me go "Wow :: " That wasn't running a skimmer!

I have had enough bickering. I love my skimmer but if I can do the same thing without it that would be great. One less piece of equipment. I think without people trying different things the hobby would not be what it is today. Think live rock compared to bio balls. That was a step back for 2 steps forward. Thats what I meant by closed minded. Not being able to grasp that it may work.

You said earlier you never saw a T5 tank that made you say "Wow" either but now you are using them.

I don't recall saying this... i might of a ways back.. but now i've seen many t5 tanks that make me go "wow". I've still never seen a skimmerless tank that makes me go "wow" and until i do, my opinion wont change.

I'm not trying to argue with you, as i have no issues with anything you have said... i'm just tired of this thread coming up once a month and KSC saying this every time..

"I love my skimmer but if I can do the same thing without it that would be great." according to KSC you can do the same thing without that skimmer, just do huge water changes and have a huge fuge. You know what-- it may even work if you're good enough at it.. but who wants to do that many water changes? It's why products are invented in the hobby, to make things easier..

Why do people use light timers? They cost money.. that money could be better spent elsewhere... all you have to do afterall to shut your lights off is unplug them or flip a switch... so why don't we all do that?

^^ the answer is simple, it's not nearly as convenient.

I think we are starting to argue over nothing now. I just think that there are many ways to keep a succesful system and its interesting that what works for you may not work for someone else. Joel, I did not intend to ruffle your feathers and I am sorry if we got into a pissing mach. Good luck with all your tanks and methods.

same here... you didn't ruffle my feathers, no hard feelings... i think we really both think the same thing, we're just voicing it in different ways.

KSC on the other hand is pretty good at ruffling feathers..

Now you have a whole new skimmer thread to deal with LOL. I am not getting baited into that one.......Hopefully.

i just should not have said anything =/ . I just want to stay out of it... maybe everyone will listen to KSC, and then when they're tanks go downhill i'll have the best tank in the club ;) :)

You can give it but you sure can't take. Let's see a couple shots of that "high tech" zeo tank....

no hard feelings... i was poking fun, not seriously trying to insult you.. it's clear that you've had at least moderate success running your tank the way you have, i'm not trying to negate that... i guess i'm just trying to say that style system is not for everyone.. and certainly not for those new to the hobby.

Did you ever think that your tank would improve even more if you ran a decent skimmer?

Here's that "high tech" zeo tank...

Nice! I think that's the first time I've seen your tank. I'll let you in on a little secret. My 40g tank is going to be a t5 tank, oversized skimmer (rated for 100) and I'll be using one of those ULNS systems, probably Britewell. I think it will be interesting to see the difference between the 2 systems. Keep skimming, it's working for you.

lol KSC... i love you man... we have our differences... but i love you.

LOL that isn't my tank there just a FYI... that's KZ's show tank, in germany... runs a big skimmer and it's obviously a full blown zeo tank... i wish i could say that was my tank, but that wouldn't be right ;) .

As far as my tank... people will be seeing it someday, but presently, i'm not really all that happy with it, and i'm even less happy with my ability to take a good picture... i just threw that picture up there as an example of a beautiful tank that runs a skimmer.... why would they run it if they thought it didn't do them any good?

A zeo tank must have a skimmer to remove the bacteria. Thats a sick tank. I have a zeo tank too so I need my bad a** skimmer. I have actually had like 5 skimmers over 2 years and I am finaly satisfied with its performance. I hope all our tanks look like that someday.

Those Germans are no joke when it comes to reef keeping.

no kidding.... Polish and Italian reefers are the same way...

There's a lot more detailed pictures of that tank too... one of my favorite ever tanks.

KSC- I woulda paid money to see the look on your face when you looked at that tank and thought it was mine :p .

I just want to make it clear though, I'm not trying to dis what you're doing, i just don't think the average hobbyist would have much success with that method... and i also think that if you gave a good skimmer a legitimate shot, you'd be impressed with how much more you could get out of you're already nice tank..

There's just certain things i feel strongly about in this hobby, and a skimmer is one of them... so i happen to protect it to the death...
