Big Problem

I got home from work this morning and found that the thermostat on my heater had failed and the tank temp was at 91. I removed the heater and am in the process of letting the tank cool down. Right now the only coral who looks like crap is my RBTA, it had moved around and then i found it had fallen off its rock. There is some brown stuff coming out of its mouth, which from what I read may just be it digesting from the stress. I have put it back up on a rock, hoping it will reattach itself and pull through. How will I be able to tell if it isnt going to make it so I can get it out before it crashes my tank? Thanks, wish me luck.

It was a Stealth, Ive used their brand for years with no problems. Apparently they changed manufacturers and have been crap since then. I learned the hard way. The problem now is i cant get the RBTA to attach to a rock. It sits there for a minute and then falls off.

watch it...it is on a stress walkabout.

I would get some carbon running, and get a BUNCH of water change water READY TO GO.

only prob is i have to go to work for 24hrs tomorrow and i wont be able to keep an eye on the tank. or do water changes

do the water change now, run carbon, make sure your powerhead intakes are covered, and get SOMEONE in to put an eyeball on your tank.

Same thing happened to me recently and it really sucks! As a corrective action, I put in two smaller heaters that total to the wattage of the one that failed. In other words, I added two 200 watt heaters to replace my single 400 watt heater. This way if one fails it will not be catastrophic to the tank.

+1 here on the multiple smaller heaters. Also use a temp controller on them or an Aqua Controller.

So the tank has recovered from the heater failing and bringing the temp up to 91. Unfortunately my RBTA, Green hammer and an Acan frag didnt make it. My Finger leather is looking rough not extending upward but I'm going to give it a little more time and see if it comes around.

a Stealth killed our 30g..it actually cracked open (the heater). We had two undersized ones in the sump figuring if it got stuck on it wouldn't be so bad. It probably would have been OK if it didn't split and spill it's insides... live and learn.

wow that is scary i had a stealth on my 38 fresh and it failed off, i got a new heater after that and i dont know the brand name... i should its probably a bad thing that i dont lol

Just to note.
I've had 3 stealth heaters a 250 and 2 100 watters.
Never had a problem with them.
I consider them to be very reliable.And I've had them for years.

I tried a stealth for the first time....not even 6mo old and it is stuck on...happen to notice the tank creeping up to 83....only good for mixing water now or use on a controller

I talked to B and he told me that Stealth changed manufacturers about 3 years ago and the heaters have had problems ever since. I also have used them for years with no problem till now. I grabbed a Sera heater and a blueline controller, this is def the way to go. With my Halides on the temp doesnt get above 79. The Blueline is much more reliable at controlling the temp than the heaters thermostat.
