40 gallon on a 75 stand?

Can this be safely done? It is a wooden stand with plywood on the top. My 75 sprung a leak. I have a 40.gallon I can use but don't have a stand.

You might need to use a thick plywood top if you want to put a tank with a different footprint 40br (36x18) vs. the 75 (48x18) because the weight distribution and supports may be in different areas. For a 40br you usually have load bearing surfaces under all four outer edges of the tank and a cross-brace in the middle. With the footprint overlap here, one of the sides of the tank might be hanging over unsupported space.

If you use a thick, strong panel on the surface of the 75, it may distribute the load enough to be solid but you'll want to be careful.
