Went to Sea Creature today for the first time and left as soon as I could! The "owner" bassed all other fish stores in Mass. Also was telling me false infomation. Had no stock in the store at all. Bought a fire shrimp and 7 snails (only because I needed them today). 4 snails died and the fire shrimp also died! NO GAURENTEE at all. There are other fish stores that give 48 hour gar. but he said no one ever gives one. Caught him in many lies and said bad things about alot of store!!! Stay Away

First you posted in the wrong forum. Second, why did you choose your first post to give a "vendor review"? I've been to sea creatures a number of times and they have excellent prices and great corals. If in fact they had "no stock" at all, you have to understand that during the holidays the majority of stores hold off on shipments until after the new year.

What kind of set-up do you have? Did you acclimate the shrimp/snails? Both are very sensitive to sudden changes in salinity and temperature. Not to knock you down, but seems a bit shadey to knock a reputable store down in your first post. JMO.

sea creatures

I currently have a 75 reef and everything in it comes from there.
I just got some snails, crabs, shrimp and a sea hare this week and mine are great.
I have been going there for over ten years and never heard him lie.
I've probably spent more time there than at work!!!
Fact is,he had a problem with his order this week because of the holiday and did his best to get stuff.
Go there on a thursday night and people buy stuff before it gets unbagged.
He's that busy.
But in the many years I have been going there,I have heard him talk people out of buying things that waste thier money.
He is honest enough that he's not a salesman.
Nobody can change the fact that you had a bad experience there, but I can't possibly believe it was that bad.
Also did you bring him a water sample from your tank?
I don't know the details of your situation but if I own a fish store I wouldn't take anything back without a water sample.
I think most will agree that If they were alive there and they died in your tank that quickly,it's not the livestock.
John has a extremely good reputation in this hobby and to bash him like that being new is like he said, shady.

Personally think there is something more to it. I have been to see John a number of times. The thing that keeps us all loyal customers is his honesty & prices. He would be the first one to lose a sale because he gave his honest opinion & said that you don't need it. Many times as a newbie to the hobby I have walked in drooling over some of the more expensive corals & he would just look at me & say “Nahh, Not ready! Good luck! Just figured I would post my two cents.

nice first post....
on that note, i have recieved no guarantee from any fish store on saltwater livestock, and John not having anything in stock surprises me...even at his emptiest there is a ton of stuff there.

I purchased a fire shrimp from him a few weeks ago and it is happily alive even after my substandard acclimation process and slightly off water perameters.

And he cant have a gaurentee because everything there is so cheap! :)

What information was he giving you that was "false" do you just mean stuff you didnt want to hear?

You seem to be the only person with this much trouble. I have been going to John for 3 or more years now. I have bought most of my equipment for my 180 from him, and the prices have always been great. The few things I didn?t buy from were used items from this site.

You want to talk about good honest service? I picket up a used ETS skimmer from a BRS member yesterday, brought it to John and he called the manufacture and answered some questions I had about the skimmer. I would like to know haw many stores would do that for their customers.

The inventor is low because of trouble ordering because of the holidays and he has also been doing a major cleaning on the salt tanks. I am sure he explained this to you.

In the last 2 weeks I have bought about 100 snails 8 peppermint shrimp and a flame angel. You are more than welcome to come over and count them and make sure there are still there. I haven seen any empty shells, so I?ll assume they are ok. Unfortunately due to inexperienced people, poor water quality and improper acclimation procedures most stores do not offer a warrantee on salt water fish.

Since this is your first post I have the following questions for you.

Salt level?
Ammonia?
Nitrite?
Nitrate?
Ph?
Alk?
Do you work for another LFS or just trying to start trouble?
Answer honestly we wouldn?t want you to be like the ?owners? you refer to.

I have a great 55 set up, and yes i did take care of my tank the correct way. Just keep in mind some people have good and bad experences at all diffrent stores. This is what this sight is for, to place comments with good and bad experences. What kind of owner operating store should sit there and bash all other surrounding stores that are known for great quality fish, coral ext.?What is wrong with the store in Hudson NH?? He had nothing but negative comments about other store names removed...I am not going to sit here and defend myself, i am clearing stating MY personal experence..

Please folks. We're having to do a lot of moderating in this thread.

In this forum you must restrict you comments to your experiences with the store in the thread title! If you want to express your thoughts about a previous poster, or tell them what you think about their comments . . . then just don't. This is not the place for a discussion.

Finally, and this should go without saying, NO THREATS of any kind will be tolerated on any of our forums.

Please stick to the rules or we will close this thread.

Thanks, Nate

I have NEVER felt like John was giving me bad info. (personally I would like to know which lies you caught him in.) In this hobby there is a lot of personal opinion on equipment and methodology. I frequent his store regularly and he has never started or invoked into a conversation his distaste for another LFS. I personally don’t know of another store that gives a 100% money back guarantee on salt water fish and live stock BUT I will tell you that on a the 2 occasions where the live stock didn’t live past a day he did refund me store credit of his own free will. In my experiences, Johns store has proven to be very helpful and informative. It just seems personal and provocative to accuse Sea Creatures of these faults...especially on your first post.

I've always had good experiences at Sea Creatures. I never base an opinion of a store on a single visit. Every store has its bad days and good days . . . especially an aquarium store where stock comes in on one day is can be mostly gone within the next few days (the next few hours at Sea Creatures most times :)).

Caught him in many lies and said bad things about alot of store!!! Stay Away

Just keep in mind some people have good and bad experences at all diffrent stores.

Stay Away? Sound like you saying every person that goes in there will have a bad time; you?re not suggesting you just had a bad time. Seems to be more good than bad experiences there, am I wrong?

How old is your tank? What skimmer do you run? I think I came in just after you left. Did you tell him all his prices were outrageous? John takes a lot of pride in his store and the service he provides. And if someone goes in insulting his store and him I would expect he might become defensive. I would like to hear the lies he told you.

I have seen Johns cost on many things he sells and I can say he defiantly not gouging us on the prices. A good example was the AC3 Pro I bought. I showed him the price I could get it online for, which was less then his cost, he agreed I was better off getting it online. When other customers asked about the AC controllers I have seen John show them the website I ordered from. I don?t think a person that lies would do that?

So how about listing those lies, or at least giving an example?

Jeff, we know what this is. just let it die---its obvious that his "experience " was an outlier and the normal consistant experience is good.

Ok,
As a person that just recently visited Sea Creatures for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I can say that I was stunned at Sdulak's experience. Not only has the livestock that I have bought been heathier than any place I have seen so far, but the knowledge and customer service and prices are INCREDIBLE. I mean, John took an hour out of his time to Assemble the mod kit for my MJ1200 and I had never been there before. Isn't the reason that mod kits are cheap is because you are suppose to do the assembly yourself?

Sdulak, as you can see from the responses to your message, most people have very positive things to say about Sea Creatures.

John even makes everyone keep their shoes on when Casino is around. LOL

oh yeah and I went there today to see what he had in stock.
You must have missed the clam tank full,90 full,180 full....
The fish were low because of the holiday but there is enough to fill your 55 gallon 10 times.
And like I said, overe 10 years going there and never heard him trash other stores. But the store you mentioned is way overpriced!!!!
