I think even if they pass this bill in Hawaii, they can't stop other countries from collecting fish, so the hobby will go on. It will just become more expensive. Personally, I like anything they do to protect the reefs, etc., but just stopping the aquarium enthusiast isn't going to make much of a difference. Between the oil spills and the flooding in Australia, the reef population is already in danger. I would, however, like to see the middlemen or pet stores put a little more effort into keeping their livestock healthy. I think most of the fish are lost before they ever reach our tanks. Perhaps that is the area the legislators should concentrate on. I don't know how many fish are removed from the ocean, but I feel bad when I think about what those fish go through just to reach us, and I know I feel terribly guilty when I lose one. Although we are the end consumers, I prefer to think we are not the biggest reason the reefs are dying.
