This algae piped up over the last 3-4 weeks. I did 3 20 gallon water changes over the last 2 weeks. It is reddish brown and it seems to upsetting my sps &LPS and nem. Need recommendations. Just started unning puragen and activated carbon right now trying to clear up the water a bit. Nitrate less than 5 phosphate 0

did you add any dry rock or sand lately?

Nope nothing new. will running a UV sterilizer help beat them I have a 25 watt aqua UV unit

Yes and look into blackout. I believe you shouldn’t do water changes though, you have to starve them out

I did let my nitrates go up for a month. Thought I had beat them [emoji35]

I believe they come from a imbalance in no3 and po4. Definitely do some research on it. Also I’ve heard peroxide can beat it as well but( big but ) can damage your whole tank as well if overdosed.

Yes I have read that also. Well here we go again [emoji17] well at least my fish are all happy lol!

So I just got back from a pretty bad dino outbreak...here's what worked for ME, your mileage may vary. I did a 100% tank blackout for 3.5 days. Wrapped the tank in a pair of blackout curtains and taped them shut. Also if it is going to be completely sealed, you may want to remove your light fixture as it will get soaked in condensation (watch a couple videos on youtube of guys doing this, a bunch of them have this issue). I also dosed 1.5 mL of H2O2 twice daily (50 gallons total tank volume). Most people say 1 mL per 10 gallons is safe, but I wanted to stay below that threshold. My tank came out of this process 100% clean, even the little bit of green algae on some rocks was gone. All corals (lots of SPS, LPS, and zoas) held up perfectly. Only issue is I believe my awesome rainbow anemone crawled into a powerhead and blended himself. Luckily he was pretty small and hasn't had any negative effects on the tank. He may also still be hiding as well.

Unless you have junky sps and most cheap sps are very hardly. When you do a 3-4 days of tank black out, it does have some impact on sps especially the expensive or high end sps.

Every new tank I set up has been like this after a couple months. The algae will eventually phases out after a couple months. Just hang in there.

Been up for 8 months this tank swap has been a real roller coaster ride
