Replacing filter with live rock

Hello, i have had recent frustrations with my setup in my filter (aquaclear 110(500gph)) That my sponge and carbon are building up bad stuff in the filter, and i heard it works better to get live rock rubble to replace everything, is this true? should i get another smaller filter to still filter through activated carbon?

What would i be looking for in live rubble? porous i presume?

You could just use a clean panty hose full of rubble. It's less the porosity of the rubble and more the surface area. Pebble size would be best IMO or just run a bag of carbon. You could a second filter if need be.

i just smashed up a bunch of my porous rock and a little bit of that cylinder shaped media and carbon bag. thanks for the help!
