Replacing heaters

Hi All,
Do you folks replace heaters as a matter of course at certain points in time? Say, after so many years, you ditch it weather its working or not? My tank has had the same heater for three years. I wonder if I should replace it as a precaution? How quickly will a tank cool down if the heater craps out?

I dont but, I do have 2 heaters that can each support my tank so I one dies (like one did on saterday) Im not panicing untill the new one comes in under warranty. Its well worth it for the piece of mind.
