storing live sand

I'll be picking up live sand for a project I'm building in august and I want to know what I need to do to safely be able to use this sand in the future after I cycle the rock for the new tank. I need to store it in the mean time. I've got a brute barrel and some power heads and a heater. is that enough? do i need lights to keep it alive? temperature levels matter? water conditions matter? water changes any?

Any help is appreciated.

I would say the heater(yes temp. matters),and power heads to move the water and aerate are all you need.No light needed,I'd keep it in a dark cool place to avoid temp. spikes.
No need for water changes also.I'd just check the water once a week to see if any ammonia spike happens.
